The Sabbatical Running Total
26 nights, 5 countries, 2 city sprints, and 17 days of countryside slow living - accounted for down to the penny.
When people ask how we can afford to take extended time out to travel across Europe without sacrificing comfort or good food, our answer is simple: the rhythm of slow travel balances the sprint.
Between taking off on the morning of 2nd October for Rome and leaving Milan on 28th October, we navigated two high-intensity capital sprints, booked multi-city flights, indulged in Michelin Bib Gourmand dining, drank €12 house wine liters, braved an unexpected flight cancellation via Paris, and relaxed for nearly three weeks in a stone barn in western France.
Below is our complete, transparent running ledger covering all three sabbatical dispatches so far.
Notice how our daily burn rate expanded and contracted: during our 4-night city sprints in Rome, Paris, Berlin, and Milan, we averaged around £368 - £426 per day (including high fixed transit and accommodation). But anchoring ourselves for 17 nights in Arçais with home cooking, free canal canoeing, and market produce dropped our spend to just £39.72 per day total (£19.86 per person). Alternating fast sprints with unhurried countryside stays is the secret to staying on the road without breaking the bank.
